Paul Smith - nature photographer

Having lived in both southern and northern Ontario Paul found the northern lifestyle more relaxed and to his liking.

Paul started work at a early age in the forestry sector with the majority of work being peeling logs and making plywood in a Veneer Mill. With the money saved he attended College in Toronto and graduated as a Electronics Technician but found work repairing office machines too stifling. Layoffs in the early eighties led to a career change into the mining industry starting with open pit quarry`s then moving onto hard rock underground mining.

Many of Paul`s early years in the mining sector were spent working in remote Northern Ontario bush camps. Getting married to Joan led to settling down in the Walden area and accepting a job with Inco in 1989. Since then he`s worked underground at several of Inco`s mines as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic at depths of up to 7600 feet deep and is presently working at Copper Cliff North Mine.

For many years pencil drawings were Paul`s main artistic outlet until about four years ago when he became interested in photography. Paul`s love for nature quickly turned his camera towards local woodlands, lakes, and their wild inhabitants. Some of which reside in his own backyard.

This has led to some creative landscaping to encourage their continued presence for photographic opportunities. Sharing his passions of gardening, hiking, photography and nature with Joan has led to some interesting endeavors. Such as, using a tripod and chain block to bring home rocks weighing over a ton for landscaping that double as props. The latest project....converting a remote car starter to a wireless shutter release for his camera.

As a do it yourself type person acquiring a digital camera and a photo quality printer was a pivotal and exciting time for Paul. No longer forced to accept disappointing prints from photo labs Paul now uses his computer as a darkroom to yield higher quality prints. Paul`s images have led to many new friends which in turn has led to location tips. These contacts and those who have allowed Paul access to their properties have shared in the experience by receiving a large print in appreciation.

Paul's own unique style leaves a lasting impression with every image seen, which he`s pleased to share with you.
